Rhino! Song by Song: Rhino explains...

1. Jungle Love

RHINO:"I wannabe beaten! Sex. It’s about sex, innit? I can’t think of anything else to say, really. It’s just about sex and, if you listen to the words, then – for some people – it’s about having a good time. I’ll leave it to people’s imaginations as to whether it’s me or not but, y’know, whips and sticks are always welcome…That’s why Rick’s playing on it!! Right up his street!
NB: Features Rick Parfitt on guitar.

2. Spacemaker

RHINO:"I just hate the fact the people watch too much TV and don’t do anything for themselves any more. ‘Is there a better way?’ And there’s got to be a better way, and so the Spacemaker, to me, is like some sort of benign dictator who comes along and says ‘Right, enough of that – here I am. We’re going to make the world a better place.’ Man."

3. Shame

RHINO:"This is about someone I know. It’s to do with her getting pregnant young and being an…idiot. Listen to the words. I just think that too many people have kids too young and, apart from anything else I don’t see what right they have, I grew up thinking about the big picture.. It’s purely a personal point of view, but people becoming parents before they’re ready… you’re a very lucky person if you keep your relationship together if you do that. And I think it’s wrong. I think it’s silly because you can ruin your own life. When you’re really young and have a kid, you don’t give yourself a chance to grow as a person.

4. Don’t Come Around Here No More

RHINO:"Pop song. It’s about the most unlikely topic. A pop rock type thing mate"

5. Republican

RHINO:"I hate rednecks. I just hate any zealots – and they were in the line of fire, really. There are some lyrics in this one that I do really regret writing, I have to say. One of the lines is really horrible and I do feel bad about that, but it’s a bit late for that now. However, I don’t feel bad about the sentiment of the song…in the slightest.. George Bush jnr for President? Leave me alone!
NB: Features Matt Letley on drums.

6. Two Suns

RHINO:"It’s my two sons, isn’t it? A little tune, a little vignette, I wrote when my boys were babies and lying on the carpet. I just used to be looking at them and doodling on my bass, and this tune came out."

7. The Strange One

RHINO:"This is about someone I used to know. That person doesn’t exist any more. At one time, I had great concerns about the state of their head. This is actually a love song, it’s about really caring for someone and hating to see the way that they’re going."

8. Spend Spend Spend

RHINO: "The title says it all, really. It’s about credit cards – which I’ve got! Like everyone else. It’s about junk mail, you know; want to borrow some more money? It’s to do with the politics of greed. You need this. You must have this. You want this. Spend your money, even if you haven’t got it – and then they really clobber you. It’s a bit like getting addicted to a drug. Well it is an addiction, spending, isn’t it?"
NB: Features guitar solo/rhythm guitar by Francis Rossi.

9. Rocker

RHINO: "Autobiographical. It’s about me."
NB: Features piano by Andrew Bown.

10. Mine All Mine

RHINO:"It’s about my wife. It’s down to earth. It’s true. I started it off with this wishy-washy chorus – it was a bit ‘Moon in June’ – and I just thought ‘Nope. That’s just not right. If I’m going to write a song about my missus, then it should be true.’ So it is! I love it, and she says she hates it, but, it’s done"
NB: Features organ by Andrew Bown.

11. Get A Life

RHINO:"It’s about someone I know, someone who’s not a million miles from me. Again, I will leave it to people’s imaginations to try and work out who…"
